Who is God?

God teaches us about Himself in the Bible.

God exists.

“For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For His invisible attributes, namely, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made” (Romans 1:19–20).

There is only one God.

“For there is one God” (1 Timothy 2:5). “For I am God, and there is no other” (Isaiah 45:22).

God is three persons in one.

God the Father, Jesus the Son, and the Holy Spirit. “The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all” (2 Corinthians 13:14).

Jesus is God.

“Waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ“ (Titus 2:13).

No one is higher or greater than God.

He is the only true God and He rules over man (Psalm 103:19). “That they may know that you alone, whose name is the LORD, are the Most High over all the earth” (Psalm 83:18).

God can do anything He wants to.

“Whatever the Lord pleases, He does, in heaven and on earth, in the seas and all deeps” (Psalm 135:6).

God is pure and perfect.

Everything He does is right. He never does anything wrong. “This God—His way is perfect; the word of the LORD proves true” (Psalm 18:30).

God has no beginning and no ending.

“Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God” (Psalm 90:2).

God is everywhere and knows everything.

Nothing is hidden from God. “And no creature is hidden from His sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account” (Hebrews 4:13). “Can a man hide himself in secret places so that I cannot see him? declares the LORD. Do I not fill heaven and earth? declares the LORD” (Jeremiah 23:24).

What does God do?

God created everything, including you.

God lives in heaven.

“Our God is in the heavens; He does all that He pleases” (Psalm 115:3).

God created everything.

“The universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible” (Hebrews 11:3). “It is I who by my great power and my outstretched arm have made the earth, with the men and animals that are on the earth” (Jeremiah 27:5). “For by Him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through Him and for Him” (Colossians 1:16).

God upholds and is involved with everything He made.

“He upholds the universe by the word of His power” (Hebrews 1:3). “In Him all things hold together” (Colossians 1:17). “You are the LORD, you alone. You have made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them; and you preserve all of them” (Nehemiah 9:6).

God communicates with people.

He does not speak in a voice that we can hear, but in a book that He has given to us. That book is called the Bible, the Holy Scriptures (Hebrews 1:1–2; Revelation 22:18-19). The Bible, God’s Word, is truth. Jesus said to His Father, “Your word is truth” (John 17:17). “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16).

The only way we can know what God thinks of us and what He wants us to do is to read His Word.

“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12).

What does God’s Word
say about you?

You cannot get to heaven by doing or being good.

You are a sinner.

God created the first man (Adam) and the first woman (Eve) perfectly, but they chose to disobey Him (Genesis 2:15–17, 3:1-19). Because the first man and woman disobeyed God, all people are born wanting to disobey God (Romans 5:12). This means that like Adam and Eve, you also think, say, and do things that disobey God’s word (Mark 7:21–23). When you say something that is not true, take something that is not yours, hate or lust after another person, or fail to put God first in your life, you disobey God, and that is called sin (Matthew 5:22, 28; Romans 3:10–12; Galatians 5:19–21; 1 John 3:4). Sin is wanting your own way instead of God’s way.

You are an enemy of God.

(James 4:4). “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). The punishment for sin is death. Your sin causes your body to grow old and die, but worse, it causes you to be forever separated from God. “For the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23). This means you will die one day and be punished by God for your sin in the lake of fire (Hebrews 9:27; 2 Thessalonians 1:7-10; Revelation 20:15).

You need a Savior.

Because you are a sinner, you need someone who can rescue you from your sin and its punishment (Romans 7:24). God Himself provided a Savior when He became a man and was born into the world as a baby (Galatians 4:4–5). God said,“You shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21). Because your sin separates you from God, you need someone who can make a way for your sin to be forgiven. You need a Savior. The only Savior is Jesus, God Himself (Romans 5:8-10, Acts 4:12).

You cannot save yourself.

You cannot work your way to heaven by being good, praying, going to church, or being baptized. You can’t get there by doing more good things than bad things (Romans 3:20). Even the good things you do are still dirty in God’s sight (Isaiah 64:6). God says there is a way you can have your sins forgiven, but it is not by doing good deeds (Ephesians 2:9, Titus 3:5). You can only be saved from your sins as a free gift of God’s kindness.

How can you know God?

Trust in Jesus Christ!

God is kind and loving to sinners.

“For you, O Lord, are good and forgiving, abounding in steadfast love to all who call upon you” (Psalm 86:5). God has made a way for sinners to be forgiven and made right with Him. “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son,that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16).

God sent a Savior to rescue sinners.

God’s perfect Son, Jesus, came from Heaven to Earth and was born as a baby boy. He lived a perfect life, and when Jesus became a man, He chose to die on the cross and take the punishment for sinners (John 10:18). God treated Jesus like a sinner even though He had never sinned. “For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit” (1 Peter 3:18).

Jesus died, was buried, and came alive again.

“…Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures …He was buried …He was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures…” (1 Corinthians 15:3–6). Jesus then appeared to many eye witnesses (Acts 2:32). We know God accepted Jesus’ death because He brought Him back to life! Jesus now lives in heaven with God the Father. “But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, He sat down at the right hand of God” (Hebrews 10:12).

Jesus is the only way to know God and be with Him in heaven.

Jesus said,“…I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6). This means there is no other person, prophet, or idol that can save you from sin and give you eternal life in heaven. “And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12).

Do you know God?

Turn from your sin right now and trust in Jesus as Lord of your life.

Jesus can rescue you from the punishment of sin and death.

God says you must “…’Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved…’” (Acts 16:31). To “believe in Jesus” means to trust only in Him to forgive your sin and save you from being punished forever.

Repent: turn away from living for yourself, and turn to Jesus as King of your life.

“…The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel” (Mark 1:15). “…If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9).

Are you trusting in Jesus to save you from sin?

If you put your trust in Jesus as Savior and Lord,God will forgive your sin and be King of your life (Romans 10:9)! You will no longer be an enemy of God because He will see you covered by the perfectness of Jesus instead of your sin. “For our sake He made Him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Corinthians 5:21). Jesus will be your King and Savior forever. He promises eternity in heaven to those who trust in Him (John 5:24). We know this is true because Jesus said, “Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life…” (John 3:36).

If you are trusting in Jesus as your Lord and Savior, then you will want to grow to know and love Him more each day.

For GROWTH to happen:

  • Go to a church that teaches the Bible.

  • Read your Bible and talk to God in prayer.

  • Obey what you read in the Bible.

  • Witness: Tell others about Jesus the only Savior.

  • Trust: Keep trusting and thanking Jesus that He forgives sinners like you.

  • Holy Spirit: God’s Spirit lives in your heart and will help you do these things.
